This article outlines the steps needed to manually recover and update Chromebook Kiosks where the auto-update has lapsed. This process will need to be followed once per Chrome update.

What you will need
To be able to perform the manual update you will need a few items;
- A USB Keyboard
- A paperclip, pin or small screwdriver
- A USB stick capable of holding at least 8GB
- USB needs to be blank - Avoid using the USB brand, Sandisk - Google Chrome internet browser needs to be used to download the extension in your Chrome browser |
Part 1 - Create the USB installer
Follow the instructions on this Google support page, please see the below note when you reach Step 3:
Recover your Chromebook - Recovery option 2: Use USB drive
In "Step 3: Build the USB installer", under "Identify your Chromebook", we suggest typing "SUMO " (with a space at the end). This will ensure the correct device is found. |
Part 2 - Manually update the Chromebook Kiosk
- Turn off the device by either unplugging the power cable or turning it off at the wall socket.
- Locate the button on the side of your device that is marked with a padlock symbol and the letter K:
This is located on the left side of the device if you are looking at the screen. - Use a paperclip, pin or small screwdriver to press the button on the side of the device. Hold the pin in while you turn the device back on. Once the Chrome screen appears, you can remove the pin from the side.
- The following screen should appear. If you are seeing a different screen you will need to try the previous steps again.
- Insert the USB stick with the Chrome OS file into one of the USB slots on the device. The device will automatically start to recover.
- After a few minutes, the recovery will complete and you will see the below screen. When you do remove the USB stick from the device, it will automatically reboot and move to the next step
- When the device reboots, you will see some setup screens. Click continue on the first screen.
- You will be presented with a wifi selection screen. You will need to select your network and enter your password.
- Next, you will need to enrol the device into HotDoc. You must enter the email and password supplied by HotDoc. Please contact the HotDoc Support team if you do not have this information.
- A pop up will appear asking to activate your security key. Click Cancel on this screen.
- Click on “Try another way”
- Select “Enter one of your 8-digit backup codes”
- Enter the code supplied to you by HotDoc and click “Next”. Please contact the HotDoc Support team if you do not have this information.
- The device should then be enrolled and the Kiosk application will load. Please log in with your Dashboard username and Password.
